FORT WORTH, Texas - Women's basketball player Ashley Davis and men's swimmer Alejandro Gomez have been selected TCU's Student-Athletes of the Week, the school announced Tuesday. On Monday, Davis was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
Davis, a junior from San Antonio, averaged 19.0 points per game in two Lady Frog league victories last week. She set a new career high with 18 points off the bench to help TCU upset No. 18 New Mexico Wednesday, then rewrote her career high for the second game in a row with 20 versus Air Force Saturday.
The forward was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line over the two contests and nailed four 3-pointers in each game. With 118, she is just two made 3-pointers shy of tying for fourth place on the Frogs' all-time list.
Gomez registered three first-place finishes and one second-place effort in individual events over two MWC meets last week. The junior won both the 500-yard freestyle (4:40.98) and the 1000-yard freestyle (9:46.06) Saturday at Utah. His time in the 500 free was the best clocking by a TCU swimmer in the event this season.
On Friday, Gomez had one win and a runner-up finish against the 20th-ranked BYU Cougars. His victory came in the 1000 free, as he was the only competitor to break the 10-minute mark (9:55.31). The native of Caracas, Venezuela, placed second in the 500 with a time of 4:41.34, just .41 seconds off the winning pace.
