FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU's men's and women's swimming and diving teams have both been predicted to place in the top half of the league in the school's first year in the Mountain West Conference, according to a vote by the MWC head coaches. TCU, the conference's lone newcomer, had its men's team picked third among six schools, while the women were selected as the fourth-place squad in a nine-team division.
Led by veteran coach Richard Sybesma, the Horned Frogs have enjoyed much success in recent years. The men claimed the Conference USA Invitational crown each of the past four years, while the women's side posted the program's first-ever conference title in 2004 and followed that performance with a runner-up placing last season.
BYU and UNLV are favored to share this year's Mountain West Conference regular-season title in men's swimming and diving. Both schools gathered three first-place votes and a total of 23 points en route to sharing the top spot in the men's poll. TCU was selected third with 16 points, while Wyoming claimed fourth with 13 points. Utah (eight points) and Air Force (seven points) round out the poll in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
On the women's side, UNLV captured the top spot in the poll with 59 points and five first-place votes. Utah was predicted to finish second with 53 points and two first-place votes, while BYU claimed third with 53 points and two first-place tallies. TCU was selected fourth with 43 points, while Colorado State was picked fifth with 41 points. Wyoming settled in the sixth position with 29 points, while New Mexico claimed seventh with 23 points. San Diego State (16 points) and Air Force (eight points) completed the poll in eighth and ninth, respectively.
The TCU swimming teams begin their seasons on Oct. 15 with the annual Alumni/Varsity meet at the University Recreation Center. The first regular-season contest will take place on Oct. 20, when the women travel to face league foe Colorado State. Both teams will then compete in the CSU Early Bird Invitational from Oct. 21-22.
