FORT WORTH, Texas -- Football's Cory Rodgers and volleyball's Nirelle Hampton have been selected as TCU's male and female student-athletes of the week for Sept. 26.It is the first time either student-athlete has received the honor.
Rodgers previously was named The Walter Camp Foundation Division I-A National Offensive Player of the Week and the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his four-touchdown performance in Saturday's 51-50 come-from-behind win at BYU. The Houston native is believed to be the first player in TCU history to score touchdowns via rushing (two), receiving and a kickoff return in the same game.
Rodgers' 100-yard kickoff return came after the Cougars had taken a 14-0 lead in the opening 5:43 of the game. His 2-yard scoring run with 1:51 left in the third quarter began the Frogs' comeback from an 18-point deficit (34-16). Rodgers' 34-yard reception from Jeff Ballard pulled TCU within 41-36 with 6:02 to play. The fourth and final score came on a 3-yard run in overtime, setting the stage for Chris Manfredini's game-winning PAT.
A true freshman, Hampton recorded 34 assists, four digs and one kill in the Horned Frogs' victory over Grambling State on Saturday. A night earlier, the Gainesville, Fla., native logged 47 assists, seven kills and six digs in a five-set match against Winthrop. Hampton is the third consecutive volleyball player to grab the women's award.
