Fort Worth, Texas - The TCU women's rifle team opened its season with a pair of wins this weekend as it defeated both Nevada and San Francisco. The Frogs got a number of stellar individual performances as they defeated the Wolfpack 1470-1401 and the Dons 1495-1462 at the War Memorial Gym at San Francisco.
Head coach Karen Monez was excited about the early season success but believes that her team can reach much higher levels this year. "It is great for the team to be able to start the year on such a positive note," she said. "Each match the individual team members compete in is just another stepping stone on their way to becoming a better shooter. The scores show improvement from last season, but there is still plenty of room for this team to continue to grow and raise its performance."
Leading the way for Monez' squad against Nevada was junior Celeste Green. A 2003 NRA All-American, Green finished as the top shooter in her first competitive rifle action since 2003 with an air rifle score of 380 in a 40-shot course of fire. The first-place finish was the ninth of her collegiate career. Freshman Aida Garcia earned a second-place finish in her collegiate debut with a score of 372. Sophomore Alicia Davis shot a 362 to place fourth and senior Carly Snead helped the team to victory with a sixth-place score of 356.
Freshman Tanya Gorin offered a glimpse of her enormous potential as she took first-place honors in her first collegiate competition against host San Francisco with an air rifle score of 379. Close on her heels, however, was fellow Frog, junior Emily Conway. The team's top shooter last season, Conway earned second-place with a score of 378. Nikki LeCompte and Erin Lemmons both fired scores of 369 to finish tied for fourth to round out the team's performance.
The Frogs will return to action Oct. 1-2 when they host the 15th annual Horned Frog Invitational.
