FORT WORTH, TEXAS (January 23, 2001) -- The TCU Horned Frogs have named Don Sommer as their head strength and conditioning coach, Athletics Director Eric Hyman announced today.
Sommer will be responsible for the overall direction, design and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for all sports at TCU.
Sommer comes to TCU after serving in a similar capacity at the University of Missouri for the past two years. He had been part of the Missouri Tiger program since 1989, serving first as a graduate assistant for two years, before assuming the assistant strength and conditioning coaching post in 1991.
"We are excited to have Don a member of our Athletic Department Team," said Hyman. "He comes highly recommended and is respected by all the coaches in the Missouri Athletic Department. It is a tribute to TCU, that we can attract somebody of Dons caliber."
Sommer is a graduate of the University of Texas El Paso with a B.S. degree in education. He was a four-year letterman and starter for the Miners football squad, earning freshman All-America honors in 1982 and honorable mention all-Western Athletic Conference accolades in each of his four campaigns.
"Im very excited to be here and be part of the athletics program at TCU where there is a commitment to winning," said Sommer. "Im also glad to be back in the state of Texas, which is where I belong."
Sommer was selected to play in the Blue-Gray College All-Star before being selected by the Houston Oilers in the 10th round of the 1986 NFL draft. He played professionally with the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts.
Following his football career, Sommer returned to the classroom where he earned his M.S. in health education from the University of Missouri.
