Kurt Woodward was named to the TCU triathlon staff in May 2022 and serves as head coach Jenny Garrison's top assistant coach.
Woodward makes his way to Fort Worth after serving as coach Garrison’s assistant coach at North Central College from 2016-21. In addition to serving as women’s triathlon assistant coach in Naperville, Ill., Woodward also served as head coach of the men’s swimming program.
The duo of Garrison and Woodward saw immediate success during her first year at the helm for the Horned Frogs, producing two team wins, two top-10 finishes and a trip to Nationals.
In their first competitive race in program history, the Horned Frogs beat Drury at the DeGray Lake Triathlon (Sep. 10). Garrison had each six of her competitors finish inside the top-10, with Maria Coral taking first-place with a program-best time of 1:04:14.30.
TCU held its first home race during the inaugural season, hosting the Battle in the Fort Triathlon (Sept. 17) which saw the best race field outside of Nationals. The Horned Frogs took first-place with a total score of 170, beating No. 1 and eight-time national champion Arizona State by two points.
The Horned Frogs finished their inaugural season with a sixth-place finish at Nationals (Nov. 11) led by Maria Coral who placed 12th with a time of 1:05:10.90.
Woodward guided both Maria Coral and Sara Gimena to CTCA All-American honors in year one, Coral earned Second-Team honors where Gimena received Honorable-Mention honors.
Woodward, who owns a USAT Level I Triathlon Coaching Certification, began coaching age-group triathletes in the early 2000’s, which eventually led to working closely with a USA Triathlon (USAT) High Performance Junior Elite team. He has also coached many camps and clinics for USAT at the Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. These camps and clinics consisted of USA Junior Men’s Select Camp, the USAT U23 Select Camp and the Collegiate Recruitment Program Camp.
While in Naperville, Woodward coached on the MMTT Junior Elite Team and the MMTT Naperville Developmental Youth Team. He has coached many triathlon-specific clinics, masters swim classes, run club events, track workouts and Computrainer classes with Experience Triathlon. He owns a USAT youth coaching certification and a certification from the National Federation of Personal Trainers.
Woodward has been competing as a triathlete since 1998, excelling in all distances of triathlon. In addition to his competing in triathlon races, he also has experience in race directing and is a USA Triathlon certified race director with an endorsement for draft legal races. He has served as the race director for USA Triathlon NCAA Region Qualifiers from 2016-18 and in 2021. He has also served as the assistant race director at USAT Junior Elite Cup Qualifiers in Pleasant Prairie, Wisc., from 2016-22.
