Vying for a spot in the NCAA Championships alongside Pedrico, Rolland De Ravel
TULSA, Okla. – Duncan Chan continued his breakout fall campaign in the early stages of the ITA All-American Championships.
Chan won two qualifying singles matches on Monday and Tuesday and advanced into the main draw.
The junior pitched a straight set defeat of No. 71 Sam Landu of Indiana, 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 16. He kicked off the tournament, held annually at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 opening round takedown of Tulsa's Timothy Seger.
Chan, ranked 106th nationally, will battle fellow qualifier Amar Tahirovic (Bucknell) in the round of 64 at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
He joins Albert Pedrico and Cosme Rolland De Ravel as one of three main draw participants representing TCU. Pedrico and Rolland De Ravel are the No. 2 seed in the 32-team doubles bracket. They automatically qualified on the strength of their preseason ITA No. 4 ranking.
Pedrico and Rolland De Ravel open with a 3 p.m. tilt vs. 25th-ranked Connor Smillie and Jakub Vrba of Arkansas. It will be the duo's first match as partners.
Chan, Pedrico and Rolland De Ravel were three of five Horned Frogs who competed in qualifying singles. All five players won at least one match.
Though he ultimately fell one victory short, Julian Alonso demonstrated considerable growth. The junior won three prequalifying matches to reach the qualifying draw, where he then blanked No. 115 Gabriele Brancatelli (Florida State) in a 6-3, 6-2 decision on Monday. Alonso ultimately came up short vs. 67th-ranked Jack Anthrop of Ohio State in the round of 16.
Rolland De Ravel, tabbed No. 81 in the preseason ITA rankings, coasted to a 6-2, 6-4 win at the expense of Cal's Fryderyk Lechno Wasiutynski on Monday's opening round. The 77th-ranked Pedrico notched a come-from-behind victory over Alexandre Verlaguet of Stetson, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. No. 88 Roger Pascual picked up the first ranked victory of his career, blowing by No. 120. Erik Schiessl of Florida State, 6-2, 6-1.
Collectively, the TCU quintet competed to a 10-4 combined qualifying record. TCU's collective fall singles record stands at 17-8 ahead of main draw action in Tulsa and the overlapping Milwaukee Tennis Classic, where four players will compete from Thursday-Sunday.
Chan improved his combined fall record to 11-0. Five of his seven singles victories have come against ranked players. He ousted No. 6 Kenta Miyoshi (Illinois) and No. 7 Ozan Baris (Michigan State) to win the Battle in the Bay Classic singles championship on Sept. 14.
TCU's main draw trio now has its first of three chances to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships, held from Nov. 18-23 in Orlando, Fla. From the ITA All-American Championships, 10 singles players and four doubles teams will punch their tickets. Additionally, singles quarterfinalists and doubles semifinalists earn All-American status for the 2025-26 season.
