No. 15 TCU occupies fifth place following 36 holes at Keene Trace Golf Club
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Horned Frogs' season will come down to one round on Wednesday.
TCU is in position to make the cut for the NCAA D1 Women's Golf Championship on the number following two rounds of play at the NCAA Lexington Regional at Keene Trace Golf Club. The 15th-ranked Horned Frogs shot a two-over 290 on Tuesday, bringing their 36-hole total to 582 (+6).
The Frogs lead No. 22 Vanderbilt by one stroke for the all-or-nothing fifth position. The top-five teams from each of the six Regionals advance to Nationals, held from May 16-21 at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
The final 18 holes should be nothing short of dramatic. Just seven strokes separate teams three through seven on the leaderboard. No. 25 Kansas State occupies sole possession of third place at even-par. TCU will play alongside the Commadores and fourth-place USC (+2, 578) in the final round.
No. 3 Florida State leads the 12-team field at 14-under 562.
As was the case in round one, Sofia Barroso Sá willed TCU to the positive side of the cut line. The junior fired off a three-under 69 and sits a solo fourth at minus-five (139). She birdied four of her last eight holes, including three-of-four from pins 4-7, and has carded a tournament-leading 11.
Barroso Sá trails tournament-leader Mirabel Ting (Florida State), the nation's No. 1 ranked player, by three strokes. She is one of 10 players under par. Combined with her even-par 216 at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational in September at Keene Trace, Barroso Sá has posted four rounds of par-or-better on the PGA Tour level course.
The birdie surge from the junior capped a strong finish for the Frogs. TCU finished four-under over its final six holes after teeing off on the back nine. The Horned Frogs shot a three-under across holes 10-15 but were offset briefly by a rotten run of nine bogeys around the turn.
Equally invaluable to TCU's finish were freshmen Gracie McGovern and Camille Min-Gaultier. McGovern finished one-under while Min-Gaultier was even. The pair of first-years are tied for 22nd at two-over 146.
McGovern had been building toward an under-par round. She had turned in a counter and been no worse than two-over in each of her last four rounds. The former No. 9 world junior birdied holes five, 12 and 18.
Min-Gaultier has been the model of consistency throughout the Regional. She recorded just one bogey on the day and has been even-par over her last 31 holes. To that end, she leads the field in pars (30).
Notably, Min-Gaultier rolled in the Horned Frogs' 500th birdie of the season with an up and down four on the fifth hole. TCU needs eight birdies to break the 2021-22 team's single-season program record of 508.
Kirstin Angosta and Meagan Winans shot a 78 and 79, respectively, to cap TCU's round.
