Mohammed Kowa takes 1500m and 800m titles
DENTON, Texas – TCU track and field made the short trip up I-35 on Saturday for the Bill Schmidt Invite, hosted by UNT. The Horned Frogs braved the weather and secured eight event wins, including a pair by junior Mohammed Kowa.
After a nearly two-hour weather delay to start the meet, Stone Burke got the Frogs started on the right foot with a first place finish in the 3000m Steeplechase (9:30.19). TCU's distance runners continued to set the tone as Gabby Martin (17:34.04) and Olivia Andrews (17:48.25) went one-two in the women's 5000m, and Brayden Schick, running unattached, led the charge for the men, winning the 5000m (15:01.61) in his collegiate debut on the track.
Kowa (3:54.20) and Anastacia Gonzales (4:33.63) also picked up wins in the men's and women's 1500m, respectively. Kowa came back later in the afternoon and won the 800m as well.
Sasha Crawford secured her first event win of the outdoor season. The sophomore ran a 2:13.23, going one-two-three with her teammates Georgia Scott and Gonzales.
In the field, TCU's Yannik Knobloch won the long jump with a wind-aided (+5.0) leap of 7.28m (23-10.50). In the triple jump, Alleah Krote finished first with a 12.37m (40-7.00) jump.
The Frogs' freshman pole vaulters also had a solid day. Michael McCloy earned a third place finish, clearing 4.75m (15-7.00), and Mamie Grace McClelland recorded a new PR of 3.50m (11-5.75) to finish fifth.
In the sprints, Finn Dunshee qualified for the men's final and went on to finish as the runner-up in 10.50. Freshman Bryce Brazzell took fourth overall in the women's final with an 11.81, while teammate Mikayla Hayes ran an 11.72 in the prelims but did not run in the final.
TCU is back in action April 11-12 in College Station at the 44 Farms Team Invitational.
