HOCKLEY, Texas – TCU has its best shot to win a team and individual Big 12 Championship in 13 years of conference membership.
The 15th-ranked Horned Frogs will enter Thursday's final round a solo third (+9, 577) and three strokes back of the lead. TCU shot an even-par 284 on Wednesday in their second stroll across the championship course at The Clubs at Houston Oaks.
Camille Min-Gaultier claimed a share of the individual lead after firing a three-under 68. Min-Gaultier bagged six birdies – the most in a round by any competitor – and is minus-2 (140). The nation's No. 55 ranked player, Min-Gaultier was five-under over her final 15 holes and closed with consecutive birdies on holes eight and nine.
TCU has never produced a Big 12 individual champion. The team's best team finish came in 2015, when the Horned Frogs placed a solo second at The Dominion Country Club in San Antonio. Kourtnie Maxtopoulous claimed a share of third place at two-under (214). Her top-three is one of two in program history at the conference's flagship event.
Should Min-Gaultier medal, she will become only TCU's second conference champion and first in 42 years. Rita Moore won the 1983 Southwest Conference individual championship. The 1983 Horned Frogs squad went on to win the NCAA Championship.
Oklahoma State leads the field at six-over. Min-Gaultier is tied atop the leaderboard with the Cowgirls' Marta Silchenko and Natalie Saint-Germain of Houston.
The Horned Frogs' second round score was the lowest of any team in the field. TCU thus far is the only squad to par the course.
Min-Gaultier's 68 was tied for the second-best in the 70-player field on the day. She sunk a 25-foot birdie putt on the par-3 ninth hole to put a bow on her round. From La Londe-les-Maures, France, Min-Gaultier fired in a three-under 32 on the front nine. She has now finished par-or-better in 10 of her 17 rounds this spring. Wednesday's showing has the freshman on the precipice of her fifth career top-10 finish and fourth in her last five events.
Her efforts were the high-water mark of TCU's second round. The Horned Frogs teed off on hole 10 and entered the turn at one-under. Min-Gaultier was one of four players to par the back nine alongside Sofia Barroso Sá, Meagan Winans and Gracie McGovern
Barroso Sá ascended 17 spots up the leaderboard – the fourth-largest rise of any player – and into a tie for 10th (+4, 144) via a one-under 70. She was the only player in the field to play bogey-free golf. The junior closed birdie on one and parred every other hole. Barroso Sá continues to lead the tournament in pars with 35.
Winans finished her second round two-over and sits tied for 25th at five-over 147. She played even-par golf across her first nine holes alongside Min-Gaultier and Barroso Sá. TCU's lone senior, Winans found herself even for the day before a double bogey on the eighth hole. She collected birdies on holes four, 10 and 14.
McGovern proved to be TCU's tone-setter. After approaching the 10th tee box tied for 49th, the freshman ascended 15 spots over the course of the morning. McGovern birdied two of her first three holes and finished one-under (35) on the back nine. The early-morning exploits propelled her two a second-round score of 73 and overall scorecard of eight-over 150.
Kirstin Angosta is one stroke back of McGovern and tied for 42nd. She was plus-seven in round two.
