Horned Frogs have an open week before returning to action Oct. 19 at Utah
The Cougars jumped out to a 17-0 lead and never trailed.
A 29-yard scoring pass from Josh Hoover to Jack Bech pulled TCU within 27-19 with 9:25 remaining. The key play on the drive was a 9-yard completion from Hoover to Savion Williams on a 4th-and-8 for a first down at the Houston 33. The Cougars, though, answered with a 66-yard drive that consumed 7:27 off the clock to add a late field goal for the final margin.
Hoover continued his nation's-best streak of nine straight games with at least 20 completions and two touchdown passes, completing 23-of-37 attempts for 233 yards. JP Richardson was his favorite target with a career-high nine receptions for 98 yards.
Williams' 21-yard touchdown catch from Hoover, capping a 7-play, 77-yard drive, provided TCU's first points of the game to make it a 17-6 contest with 2:18 left in the first half.
True freshman running back Jeremy Payne, who made his first career start, scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 2-yard carry to pull TCU within 24-12 with 5:27 left in the third quarter.
