FORT WORTH, Texas - Since departing from the TCU equestrian program, former Western standout Kirstie Frydenlund has accomplished quite a bit in her young career.
Frydenlund, who now goes by Kirstie Jones, has opened up her own photography business and is a budding superstar photographer in the horse industry. Jones last competed for the program in 2012 and recently sat down with GoFrogs.com to talk a little bit about her breathtaking imagery and successful business after graduating from the Neeley School of Business at TCU.
"I purchased a camera around Christmas my senior year of college and the first thing I did was take pictures of my childhood pony in the front pasture. I practiced taking pictures on my horse and then the neighbor's horses. A few days later, I started calling my friends who had horses to ask if I could take their pictures. Everything snowballed from there.
Shortly after graduating with my finance degree, I started my photography business that specialized in capturing the relationship between girls and their horses.
While I was on the equestrian team at TCU, we had to learn how to work with new and unfamiliar horses in a matter of minutes. It came down to reading body language, facial expressions and determining what motivated that individual equine in order to become a team in 5 minutes or less. Every equine photography session is similar to that experience - the faster I can understand the horse's personality, the better the images will be.
Every young equestrian's goal is to ride for an NCEA team, and a lot of the girls I take senior portraits for end up riding in college. I went to the NCEA National Championship last year to support TCU in the finals and was proud to see that I had former clients from all four schools in the final four bracket: Georgia, Texas A&M, Auburn and TCU. Because of my experience at TCU, I have the opportunity to talk with high school girls and their parents about the recruiting process, how the team works and how their riding career will be different in college.
Lastly, riding for the TCU equestrian program provided me with the most incredible friends who support me both personally and professionally. My teammates at TCU became my best friends and some of my biggest cheerleaders for my photography business."
