Rifle Members Compete At Olympic Trials

FORT WORTH – Four former members of the TCU women's rifle team recently took part in the Smallbore Olympic Trials held in Fort Benning, Ga.
Sarah Scherer, Sarah Beard, Erin (Lorenzen) McNeil and Hannah Black all took part in the trials and the quartet all finished in the top six.
Scherer posted the highest finish, coming in second after posting a three-day aggregate score of 1,772. Beard finished third with a three-day total of 1,762. Right behind Beard in fourth was McNeil with an aggregate score of 1,752. Black rounded out the Horned Frog shooters in sixth with a three-day total of 1,740.
On day one of the competition, Beard took the early lead. Her qualifying score of 586 match that of Scherer, but she fired a 453.8 in the finals to finish first after day one. All four Horned Frogs qualified for the finals.
The second day of competition saw two Frogs qualify for the finals in Scherer and McNeil. Scherer fired a 583 to maintain her second place position, while McNeil shot a 581 to remain in fourth place among all shooters.
Similar to day one, all four Horned Frogs qualified for the finals on the final day. Beard finished first after shooting a 582 to qualify for the final and finishing strong in the final. Scherer posted a 583 for the second day in a row and ultimately finished second. Black fired a 582 and McNeil a 579 to earn their spots in the final.
While none of the four earned a spot on the smallbore squad, three of the four will take part in the Olympic tryouts for air rifle. The trials will take place June 3-5 in Port Clinton, Ohio. Beard, Black and Scherer will be joined by current team member, Mindy Miles at the trials.
