Two Pairs Advance in California

FORT WORTH, Texas - On the first day of the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge, the TCU sand volleyball team had two pairs win their opening round matches on Saturday in Chula Vista, Calif.
The Horned Frogs (0-11) played their final dual matches of the season against CSU Bakersfield (3-1) and No. 1 Hawaii (4-0), before competing in the pairs bracket of the tournament. Natalie Gower and Shane Peters, along with the pair of Alexia Heist and Sutton Suntrum all earned first round victories to move on to the Round of 16 in the bracket.
TCU opened the day with a dual match double header and faced the Roadrunners in the opening match, before taking on the top ranked Rainbow Wahine in the finale. The Frogs battled hard, but dropped both matches, 5-0.
In the pairs portion of Saturday's matches, Heist and Sunstrum, along with Gower and Peters both needed all three sets to pull out their first victories of the season. The junior pair of Heist and Sunstrum came back after dropping the first set to Kaitlynn Ausmus and Megan Glennie of Grand Canyon, 21-17, to take the second set 24-22. The pair carried the momentum into the third set where they took the victory, 15-10, and the match.
Gower and Peters also had to battle back after dropping the first set, 21-17, to Kami Dickerson and Chloe Stone of Grand Canyon and claimed the win in the second set, 21-16. The TCU duo kept their winning ways going and won their first match with a 15-10 victory in the final set.
TCU will wrap-up its inaugural season tomorrow at the tournament, with the two duos competing in the Round of 16.
