COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Mindy Miles became the fifth Rifle shooter ever and the second Horned Frog to post a perfect air rifle score, leading TCU to the Patriot Rifle Conference title in that discipline on Saturday. Overall, TCU's team score of 4,665 gave it a second place finish.
Miles' perfect score is the fifth time a 600 has been fired in NCAA competition. Matt Rawlings from Alaska fired the first 600 in NCAA competition. In 2010, West Virginia's Nicco Compriani shot a perfect 600. On Oct. 22, 2011 against Army, West Virginia's Petra Zublasing fired a 600. Former Horned Frog Sarah Scherer is the last shooter to accomplish the feat doing so on Nov. 1, 2011 against Alaska.
Miles led all 38 air rifle participants in the air rifle discipline. She has shot a 595 or better in four matches in her freshman season, improving her score in each of her last five outings.
It is the Horned Frogs' first title of any sort in the two-year-old conference. TCU (2,302) finished third in the smallbore portion, falling to overall champion Alaska (2,325) and Ohio State (2,311).
The Horned Frogs entered day two in third place, but used their big day in air rifle to edge out Ohio State for second place overall. The Frogs air rifle mark of 2,356 topped Air Force by seven, followed by Alaska, Ohio State, Nevada and UTEP.
Sally Li provided a 592-point showing in air rifle that was sixth in the field, while Hannah Black shot a 587 to finish 11th. Nicholle Benedict also shot a personal-best 580 in an exhibition role. TCU had four of the top 15 finishers in air rifle.
Barrett Ray, whose score also did not take part in the final equation, shot a career-high 570 in smallbore.
Three Horned Frogs earned all-conference honors, decided by the top eight individuals in each event competing in finals for those disciplines to figure out the eight best. Miles and Li took home air rifle accolades while Black claimed all-conference honors in smallbore (582) with a third place finish.
TCU returns to action on Saturday for the home and regular season finale with UTEP. The Horned Frogs have their NCAA Qualifier at Air Force on Feb. 21.
