WILMER, Texas - Junior Callie Selchau garnered MVP accolades Friday, but it wasn't enough as TCU dropped a hard-fought 6-4 decision to cross-town rival SMU at BuckBranch Farm.
"We had some positive things happen today for us and I think we are all moving in the right direction," said head coach Logan Fiorentino. "Overall, I was happy with a lot of the girls today, but we have to continue to get better with some tough competitions ahead on our schedule."
The Horned Frogs made quick work of the Mustangs in Equitation on the Flat, outscoring SMU, 486-480, to capture a 3-2 victory in the event. Freshman Kaitlin Perry got the Frogs going early, upending Courtney Line, 81-78. With the victory, the California native recorded her first collegiate win. Junior Haley Jacobi and sophomore Caitlin Ader were also victorious in the event, downing Maddy Stover and Lucy Blundon, respectively.
Selchau, who is coming off a season in which she collected Honorable Mention All-America accolades on the Flat, battled Molly Osier to an 82-82 draw on Friday. With the draw, Selchau not only earned her first MVP accolade of the season, but also upped her career total to two MVP honors.
In Equitation over Fences, sophomore Courtney Motz scored the lone point for the Frogs, defeating Emily Gardner, 82-78. Ader appeared to have scored a point for TCU in the event, but closed competition against Kendall Skreden with an 85-85 draw.
With the loss, the Purple and White dropped to 0-1 on the season, while SMU improved to 1-0. The Frogs, who heading into Friday had won three of their last four meetings against the Mustangs, hadn't lost to SMU since the 2009 season.
TCU will close the month of September at South Carolina next Friday.
