
Rifle Opens Season With Win Over UTEP

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU rifle team opened the season with a 4695-4630 victory over UTEP Saturday to stretch their regular season winning streak to 21 matches. Sarah Scherer tied her career high with a 596 in air rifle and a set a new personal best in smallbore with a 589.
"This is a solid team score to start the season and I am very impressed with the individual performances today," remarked head coach Karen Monez. "The team has always improved as the season has progressed, so I am excited to see at what level their scores will be down the road."
TCU set a new school record in smallbore firing 2335 as a team. Scherer's 589 paced all shooters and she was followed closely by Mattie Brogdon who fired a 585, tying her career high. Freshman Claudia Duksa had an impressive collegiate debut, shooting a career-high 583 to finish fourth.
Rounding out the shooters in smallbore was Catherine Green, who shot a 581, while Caitlin Morrissey and Sarah Beard each fired a 580.
The Frogs turned in an impressive effort in air rifle, shooting a team score of 2360 led by Scherer's school-record tying 596. It's the sixth time in her career she has shot a 596. Green finished second with an impressive tally of 593. Beard took home fourth place honors with a score of 589.
Continuing her impressive debut, Duksa fired another career-best with a 583 to finish in seventh place. Brogdon fired a 582, Morrissey a 581 and Jaime Dowd a 581 to round out the top 10.
TCU returns to action Saturday when it travels to Charleston, S.C. to take on The Citadel.
