
No. 8 Horned Frogs Drop Skyhawks, 10-2

FRESNO, Calif. - No. 8 TCU closed the Best in the West Tournament on Sunday, dominating Tennessee-Martin, 10-2.The nationally ranked Horned Frogs, who ended the tournament with a 2-1 record, finished No. 2 overall in the final team standings. Against the Skyhawks, TCU claimed three MVP honors to go along with a 6-0 sweep of UT Martin in Western. The Purple and White also won English on Sunday, 4-2.
"We were on target today," said head coach Gary Reynolds. "The Hunt Seat team was very good. I am so proud of all of them."
Courtney Chown led the Frogs in Horsemanship, upending Hannah Derks, 75-71, to claim MVP accolades in the event. Kelsey Huffman and Lexie Estrada also tallied victories in Horsemanship, defeating Heidi Grimm and Stephanie Sanders, respectively.
In Reining, Carrie von Uhlit, a senior from California, captured MVP honors by defeating Blair Childress, 70.5-67. For the weekend, the defending National Champion went 3-0 in competition to improve to 13-2 on the season. Huffman also scored a victory in Reining, winning 69.5-67 over Sanders. Finally, senior Ashton Mickunas recorded the final point for the Frogs in the event, defeating Derks, 68.5-65.5.
Taylor Frederick was victorious in Equitation over Fences on Sunday, dropping Caroline Cramer, 78-40. With the win, the sophomore earned her first MVP of the season in Fences. Junior Lauren Quiroz followed, defeating Brittany Kasprack, 76-71. Finally, freshman Callie Selchau secured the 3-0 victory in Fences, upending Kara Bergenty, 69-60.
In Equitation on the Flat, Tassie Munroe, a junior from Valley Mills, dominated the Skyhawks' Kelsy Abell, 86-64.
With the victory, No. 8 TCU moved to 9-6 overall. Host school Fresno State captured the team-title on Sunday with a perfect 3-0 record.
"I am really proud of every Hunt Seat rider today," said assistant coach Kindel Huffman. "Everyone really rode well and were extremely strong in Fences each day. I thought Lauren Quiroz was very good on both day's, while Taylor Frederick did well in getting MVP today. Both Callie Selchau and Haley Jacobi were very consistent, which is great. We are very excited about this win and ready for Oklahoma State next weekend."
The Horned Frogs will return to action on Feb. 27 at Oklahoma State.
