FORT WORTH, Texas - GoFrogs.com recently sat down with TCU equestrian junior Tassie Munroe to share information on her history with horses and the upcoming year in this week's edition of In The Know with the equestrian program.
Munroe grabbed seven wins in her sophomore season competing in equitation over fences and equitation on the flat. She was the 2008 Willis Invitational MVP in equitation over fences.
What is your position on the National Youth Council? What are your responsibilities and how did you get involved?
"The United States Equestrian Federation (NSEF) Youth Council is a group of 20 young men and women from around America that have excelled in their breed or discipline. The goal of the council is to increase awareness of our sport to youth all over the country. We have teleconferences every other month and once a year, we have an annual meeting that typically occurs in either Kentucky or Ohio. The Council is divided into three committees: Education, Youth Convention and Promotions. I am the chair of the Promotions Committee, which is an amazing opportunity and good practice for the future, considering one of my majors is Advertising and Public Relations."
What is your family history with horses?
"Both of my parents are amazing horsemen, who did rodeo professionally for many years. My mother qualified for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) 11 times in the barrel racing along with winning the world championship in 1975. She now teaches barrel racing clinics across the U.S. and Canada. My father went to the NFR 12 consecutive times in the saddle bronc riding, winning the world championship in 1986. It's kind of a family joke about how on earth I became an English rider instead. Even though I ride a different discipline from them, their knowledge and love of horses inspire me every day. I could not be more proud of them."
How long have you been riding?
"Well, because of my parents I rode before I walked. I started jumping though when I was five."
What kinds of awards and titles have you achieved?
"In college, my greatest achievement is probably receiving the Over Fences Tournament MVP at Baylor last year. In 2007, I received a USEF National Championship. Before that, I won numerous state and zone awards."
What are your expectations for this season?
"Every year, the english team continues to improve dramatically. With the experience of the upperclassmen and the talent of the newcomers, I expect TCU to make a case for the overall National Championship this year!"
I heard you had an interesting summer - can you tell me about your internship at Billy Bob's?
"This summer, I was very fortunate to intern under Pam Minick. She and her husband, Billy, are part owners and managers of Billy Bob's. I truly could not have learned from anyone better than her considering she has been awarded Business Woman of the Year in Fort Worth. Pam taught me so much about grassroots marketing and the lessons that I learned, like how to advertise using a small budget, will help me for years to come. I was also able to meet many leaders in the community. It was truly an awesome opportunity!"
What is your greatest memory on the TCU Equestrian team?
"It would be impossible to choose just one memory. I truly cherish every moment I spend with the girls on the team. They are like a family to me. They have been my social network, my critics and my support system these past two years."
