While the TCU Athletics Department enjoyed tremendous success of the field of play during the 2009 spring semester, the highest marks of achievement came in the classroom as the Horned Frog student-athletes notched a departmental cumulative grade point average of 2.957, which is the highest since reporting began in the Fall of 1998.
"The TCU student-athletes posted the highest cumulative grade point average in 10 years during the spring semester," said Chris Uchacz, TCU Director of Academic Services. "What is even more impressive is that 50 percent of our student-athletes recorded a 3.00 grade point average this past spring semester, and we had 81 total student-athletes walk across the stage and earn their diploma this past academic campaign. Our student-athletes should be commended for their outstanding work on the field as well as in the classroom."
This past semester, 13 athletic programs recorded a team GPA of 3.0 of higher while 15 teams notched a collective GPA of 2.90 or higher where as only five teams notched at least a 3.0 GPA during the 2003 fall semester. Highlights the spring semester was 50 TCU student-athletes earning their diploma during the May commencement ceremony and 81 overall student-athletes graduating during the 2008-09 academic campaign.
Following the semester, 22 TCU student-athletes were selected as recipients of the Spring 2009 Scholar Award, which recognizes full-time students who boast a perfect 4.0 grade point average. In addition, 50 percent of all TCU student-athletes recorded a grade point average of 3.00 or higher during the spring semester while 74 student-athletes were recipients of the Spring 2009 Dean's List.
In all, 70 TCU student-athletes were named to the Spring 2009 Academic All-Mountain West Conference Team while 55 of those student-athletes also earned 2008-09 All-Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete accolades. TCU had 193 student-athletes selected as Collegiate All-American Scholars by the United States Achievement Academy for the 2008-09 academic campaign.
Individually, the TCU Athletics Department had several student-athletes earn outstanding academic awards during the spring semester. Melissa Loh (women's golf), Kevin Langford (men's basketball), Curtis Clay (football) and Michelle Nguyen (women's soccer) were selected as 2009 recipients of the Arthus Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award.
The Mountain West Conference honored TCU rifle standout Erin Lorenzen with the Hal Rothman Sports Award while Shae Reagan garnered Scholar-Athlete accolades by the National Football Foundation's Gridiron Club of Dallas.
