Von Uhlit Crowned National Champion

WACO, Texas - Carrie von Uhlit was crowned the 2009 Varsity Equestrian Reining Individual Champion on Saturday to lead TCU at the 2009 Varsity Equestrian Western National Championships.Von Uhlit collected championship honors by beating Bri Parnell, 142.5-142. She concluded the 2008-09 season with 16 reining wins.
"I had nothing to lose, so I just went out there and rode my best," said von Uhlit. "I drew a tough horse and knew I could not ride conservatively if I wanted to win."
The No. 2 seeded TCU equestrian western squad fell to No. 1 Texas A&M, 1-7, in the finals of the Western National Championship on Saturday. The Horned Frogs' western team took home second-place and finished the season with a 13-4 record.
The Aggies swept the Frogs, 4-0, in horsemanship as sophomore Ashley Aikman posted TCU's highest score in the event with a 148.5. In the reining event, von Uhlit took home the Frogs' only victory after defeating the Aggies' Tara Christiansen, 149.5-135. Von Uhlit's score was the highest of the day in the reining finals.
In the finals of the horsemanship individual bracket, freshman Courtney Chown took second-place after falling to No. 1 seed Caroline Gunn, 151-154.5, of Texas A&M. Chown ended the 2008-09 season with 11 horsemanship wins.
