TCU Equestrian returned to the Fieldstone Park Facility Sept. 3 for its first practice of the 2008-09 season. The Horned Frogs are looking to defend their 2008 Western National Championship title which they won this past April. Head Coach Gary Reynolds keeps GoFrogs.com updated in the happenings with TCU Equestrian.
TCU opens up its season Sept. 19 in Lubbock, Texas against West Texas A&M and Texas Tech.
With a couple practices under its belt, how is the team looking?
"The western team has worked very hard all summer and is looking strong. The hunt seat team has been amazing in these first few practices too."
After winning the 2008 Western National Championship, how does the team feel about being back in the arena?
"They know that defending the title will be a long and difficult road, but they are up to the task. They are definitely ready for the challenge."
Which riders will help lead the team this year?
"Team captain Carrie von Uhlit has had a fantastic off-season and will definitely look for her leadership for the entire western team. Kelsey Huffman is a very talented rider and will give us some depth on the reining team. Chloe Baker and Ashley Aikman will be great as anchors for the horsemanship team. Hunt seat team members Tassie Munroe, Lauren Quiroz and Jessica Hagen have been riding really well in practice so far."
Which fall match is the most anticipated?
"Our first big matchup will be against South Carolina, whose hunt seat team is very strong. We love competing against Texas A&M because they have many talented riders and are very well coached. The biggest match will be when Georgia comes to TCU in November. It will be a rematch from the Western National Championships, it could be the hardest fought match of the season."
Which newcomers should we keep our eye on?
"Courtney Chown is a great rider and will get the opportunity to contribute this fall and gain some experience. Lyndsi Hardin and Ryann Bluhm also show a great deal of promise for the western team. We are also looking for Katie Crenshaw, Victoria Lee, and Taylor Frederick to be big contributors for the hunt seat team."
