GoFrogs.com recently sat down with TCU Equestrian sophomore, Ashton Mickunas, to talk about last year's Western National Championship winning team.
On winning the 2008 Varsity Equestrian Western National Championship:
"I was so excited and couldn't stop smiling. I was extremely happy for the team and all that we had accomplished."
On her favorite moment in winning the Championship:
"One of my favorite moments was when we were all hugging and crying after we realized we had won. I also enjoyed the time we spent pumping each other up before we competed in the last round. It was a very serious and intense moment and we all knew we had to come home with the win."
On the National Championship being the first match she competed in the Reining:
"I had only been doing the reining for a few months before the championship and was nervous to be competing against girls who had been riding reiners for years, but I love competing under pressure."
On her hopes for the 2008-09 season:
"I hope we can take the whole team to nationals, not just the Western team. I would like to become a very strong competitor and improve as much as I can in every aspect of the sport."
On events she's competed in this summer:
"I competed at the Texas Classic in Fort Worth, Texas, and placed third in the Limited Non-Pro Class. I also competed at the NRHA Derby and won the Limited Non-Pro Class with a high score of 216."
On her typical summer day:
"I workout twice a week in the TCU weight room with Coach Gephardt. After my workouts I head to the barn and ride three to four horses depending on my schedule. I also spend lots of time on the weekends with my family and friends."
On life outside of Equestrian:
"I like working out, going to church, and going camping and fishing. I just really enjoy being outdoors most of the time."
