FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU defensive end Chase Ortiz and safety David Roach have been named to the Rivals.com All-Mountain West Conference Team.
Ortiz, selected by his teammates as TCU's 2007 Dan Rogers Most Valuable Player, is the Horned Frogs' first three-time first-team all-conference player since wide receiver Mike Renfro from 1975-77 in the Southwest Conference. Ortiz is just the fourth defensive player and seventh overall in MWC history to be a three-time first-team pick.
A senior from League City, Texas, Ortiz ranks among the MWC and national leaders with eight sacks, 15.5 tackles for a loss and three forced fumbles. He made the final watch list for the Ted Hendricks Award, honoring the nation's top defensive end.
Ortiz was the MWC Defensive Player of the Week when he recorded three tackles for a loss, including two sacks, while forcing two fumbles and recovering one in a 34-10 win over UNLV.
Ortiz has started all but one game the last three seasons. His 19.5 career sacks rank fifth on the Frogs' all-time list.
Roach, a graduate student from Abilene, Texas, places third on TCU with a career-best 73 tackles while starting all 12 games. He has five pass break-ups, two forced fumbles and an interception.
Prior to the Frogs going 3-1 in November to earn their ninth bowl trip in the last 10 seasons, Roach was moved from weak safety to free safety.
TCU faces Houston on Dec. 28 in the Texas Bowl at Reliant Stadium in Houston. Kickoff is 7 p.m. with the game televised on the NFL Network.
