The TCU Athletics Department announced today that the men's soccer program will be moved from varsity status to club status beginning with the Fall 2003 season.
During the 1999-2000 academic year, the Commission on the Future of TCU/Role of Athletics Task Force conducted an in-depth study to define the role and expectations of athletics programs at TCU. At the conclusion of the exercise, it was determined that TCU Athletics should strive to provide a positive and enriching experience for its student-athletes, while maintaining competitive programs.
"Over the years following the Commission on the Future of TCU study, we have engaged our staff and student-athletes in considerable assessment to determine if we are, in fact, meeting these expectations," said Eric Hyman, Director of Athletics. "In the past two years, it has become evident that we are missing the mark in men's soccer. Although our competitive success has been lacking, more importantly, our student-athletes have consistently communicated that they are not having a positive experience.
"We are at an extreme disadvantage in terms of competitive equity relative to the resources of the program," continued Hyman. "The move to a club program will allow our students to continue to have the opportunity to compete on a more equal playing field.
"Our sincere appreciation is extended to our coaching staffs, current and former student-athletes, their parents and the loyal supporters of this program for their efforts over the years," concluded Hyman.
The TCU men's soccer team compiled a 3-14-1 record during the 2002 season, including a 2-7-1 mark in league action, last among the 11 Conference USA teams. TCU men's soccer has recorded just six winning campaigns since 1980.
