FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU true freshman golfer Colby Beckstrom, currently college golf's 42nd-rated player, was honored on Monday for his outstanding play during the month of October. The Conference USA office announced that Beckstrom shared the league's Golfer of the Month honors with Jonathan Hill of East Carolina.
Facing one of the toughest schedules in the country, Beckstrom soared in October. He started out the month by placing tied for sixth at the NCAA Preview, an event which featured 15 of the nation's top teams. Beckstrom outperformed several All-Americans at the Preview, finishing with a team-best three-round score of 219 (+3). The North Muskegon, Mich. native helped the Frogs place 10th at the tournament.
Beckstrom also shined in his other October appearance, as he tied for 17th at the prestigious Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate after firing a two-round score of 141 (-1). He logged a four-under-par 67 in the opening round, which matched the lowest round by a TCU player during the month. His showing helped TCU finish third among the 12 invited teams. For the month, his stroke average was 72.00, the best on the Frog squad.
Beckstrom is off to a sensational start in his first collegiate season, placing in the top 20 in three of the first four fall events. He is currently tied for second place on the team with a 72.09 scoring average through 11 rounds of play. In addition, the freshman has fired rounds of 66 on two occasions, and earned the best finish of his young career when he shared runner-up honors at the Sooner Invitational in September. Beckstrom has helped the Horned Frogs move into seventh place in the most recent Golfweek ratings system.
"This is a great honor for Colby," said TCU head coach Bill Montigel. "He has played as well early on as any freshman I have ever had. Colby is going to be a big key for us this season and if he continues to work hard, he will have a bright future ahead of him."
Fifteen of the 17 opponents at TCU's October events were rated in the top 25 according to the Precept Coaches Poll. In addition, the Frogs played eight of those teams twice.
