Tre Watson joined the TCU football staff in January 2025 as safeties/nickels coach – passing game coordinator.
Watson served the previous four seasons as defensive backs coach at Cal. He worked with TCU Defensive Coordinator Andy Avalos at Oregon in 2019, when Avalos was the Ducks’ DC and Watson was a graduate assistant.
Watson helped lead a Cal defense in 2024 that forced 22 turnovers, including 17 interceptions. He coached Nohl Williams into a First-Team All-American and semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award and Chuck Bednarik Award.
The Golden Bears’ 2023 defense tied for the national lead with 28 takeaways while topping the FBS with 16 fumble recoveries. Cal also had three defensive touchdowns.
Watson coached three NFL Draft picks at Cal: Patrick McMorris, a 2024 sixth-round selection by the Miami Dolphins, Daniel Scott who was a fifth-round choice by the Indianapolis Colts in 2023 and All-American Elijah Hicks, a seventh-round pick of the Chicago Bears in 2022.
Prior to his four years at Cal, Watson was defensive backs coach at UNLV in 2020 when he was named by 247Sports to its “30-under-30” list.
Watson broke into coaching as a graduate assistant at Oregon in the 2018-19 seasons. With Avalos directing the defense, the Ducks won the 2019 Pac-12 Championship and Rose Bowl. Oregon intercepted 37 passes during Watson’s two years in Eugene. He coached future NFL safeties Ugo Amadi, Jevon Holland and Verone McKinley III.
A 2013 graduate of Washington with a BA in communications, Watson played in all 26 games over his final two seasons with the Huskies. He totaled 74 tackles, including 2.5 for loss. His two interceptions included one returned 84 yards for a touchdown. He added 12 pass breakups. Prior to Washington, he played at West Hills College and Central Washington.
In between his playing and coaching careers, Watson spent three years in Seattle training NFL players in the offseason as well as college players preparing for the NFL Combine. His client list included Budda Baker, DeShawn Shead, Shaq Tompson, Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright.
Watson is a Seattle native. He and his wife, Taryn, have a son and daughter.
