Rybakov Claims Singles Title

Alex Rybakov won the Battle in the Bay Classic over the weekend.

FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU men's tennis player Alex Rybakov added another singles title to his resume as the senior claimed the trophy at the Battle in the Bay Classic over the weekend in San Francisco, Calif.

Rybakov, a two-time All-American for the Horned Frogs, went 5-0 in singles action over the weekend and defeated three ranked opponents on his way to the title. The No. 10 ranked player in the country, Rybakov recorded two straight set victories in the opening rounds before taking down No. 95 Joseph Guillin of UC Santa Barbara. Rybakov then scored his biggest upset of the tournament in the semifinals with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over No. 4 Brandon Holt of USC before finishing it off with a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 22 Jan Zielinski of Georgia in the finals.

Newcomers Sander Jong and Luc Fomba also saw action in their first collegiate competitions over the weekend. After suffering a first-round loss, Jong was able to pick up two victories to advance to the semifinals of the consolation draw. Bertus Kruger also returned to the lineup with the sophomore picking up a singles and doubles victory in the opening weekend of action.
