FORT WORTH, Texas - All-American Cameron Norrie became the first TCU men's tennis player in program history to punch their ticket to the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Final Four with a comeback 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 9 Thai-Son Kwiatkowski of Virginia on Saturday in his quarterfinal match at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Norrie had to battle in his third straight three-set match, but overcame a late break in the first set to win 12 of the last 15 games to take the final two sets and win his 28th match of the season and ninth consecutive.
The duo went back and forth to begin the match with each player holding serve through the first eight games. Kwiatkowski picked up a late break over Norrie and then held serve to steal the first set, 6-4. Norrie did not let the loss detour him, as the sophomore broke Kwiatkowski twice in the second set to even out the match at one set a piece with a 6-2 win.
Norrie took that momentum into the final set as he ran up to a 3-0 lead. Kwiatkowski would win the next game to make it 3-1, but Norrie finished out the match by taking the final three games and served up an ace on deuce point to clinch the overall match victory.
Quotes of the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
"Cameron (Norrie) deserves a lot of credit for making the shift in his mindset after a set down and up 3-2 on serve. (Assistant) Coach (Devin) Bowen helped Cameron see what needed to happen and Cameron toughened up and put it all in. Thai-Son (Kwiatkowski) has had a great run and has played a lot of good tennis and looks like he's in a good place to have a very good summer. Cameron will continue to learn from this match and be ready for another battle tomorrow. We are proud and happy for Cameron's willingness to fight and compete."
