MTEN: Indoor Nationals Day 2 Recap
11/13/2015 12:00:00 AM | Men's Tennis
FORT WORTH, Texas – In the second day of action at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, the TCU men's tennis team once again went 1-1 in competition on Friday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Cameron Norrie, the No. 2 seed in the tournament and ranked No. 15 nationally, dropped his first match of the fall season in a hard fought match against No. 20 Tom Fawcett of Stanford. A late break in the opening set gave Fawcett the 6-4 win, but Norrie did not give up and battled to a tiebreaker in the second set. Norrie had to fend off multiple match points and even had a set point, but Fawcett was able to pull out the victory, 10-8, to take the match in straight sets.
No. 19 Guillermo Nuñez won his opening match in the consolation draw with a victory over No. 29 Chris Diaz of Ohio State. Nuñez dominated the opening frame with a 6-2 victory, but dropped the second set in a tiebreaker. The sophomore kept the battle going and was able to score the win in the final set, 6-4, to seal the victory and move into the quarterfinals.
Quotes from the Day
Head Coach David Roditi
"Another day with one win and one loss. Guillermo won a good mental battle and played one of the most consistent and best defenders in college tennis. It was just what Guillermo needed and I'm proud of him for staying focused enough to pull it out.
"Cameron didn't play as solid as he has been this fall and Tom (Fawcett) didn't give him as many free points as Cameron gave him and that was the difference. I liked how Cameron kept looking for ways to win the match and he was one point away from going into a third set. All these matches help these two with the overall goal of becoming the best players they can be and mature as competitors."
