COLLEGE STATION, Texas—Senior Emanuel Brighiu posted one of the top victories of his TCU career to advance to the quarterfinals of the men's singles main draw Sunday at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
Brighiu took down Texas' Ed Corrie in three sets in the Round of 16, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to stay alive in the singles main draw. Corrie, the No. 2 overall seed in the bracket, entered the weekend ranked No. 18 nationally. The victory marked the highest opponent that Brighiu has defeated in his career, besting his victory last spring over Rice's Bruno Rosa (No. 26). Brighiu will continue singles competition Monday, when he faces Baylor's 13th-seeded Luis Grangeiro in the quarterfinals.
"Overall, the match was pretty close, every single game," Brighiu said. "Corrie is a very tough player; I just thought I played really well today. He didn't really give me any points. I had to earn almost every point I got. I just stayed consistent on all my strokes, and it worked out for me."
"Briggy had a very good day," head coach David Roditi said. "He has been showing signs that he can play at that high level. He was just able to sustain that level of play throughout the entire match today. If he continues to play with that intensity, concentration and focus, he's going to be a very dangerous player this year."
Brighiu and senior partner Christopher Price also reached the quarterfinals of the main doubles bracket before bowing of the competition Sunday. The pairing opened the day with a tough 9-8 (8) victory over Texas' Ben Chen/Vasi Mladenov in the Round of 16 before suffering an 8-2 setback to Baylor's sixth-seeded duo of Roberto Maytin/John Peers in the quarters.
Also continuing action Monday will be senior Cameron Nash, who reached the quarterfinals of the Round 2 consolation draw with a pair of wins on Sunday. He posted victories over Lamar's Diego Snyder (6-3, 6-0) in the Round of 32 and Texas A&M's Calon Alpar [6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (14-12)] in the Round of 16.
"Cameron won some battles today," Roditi said. "It's probably one of the best tournaments that he's had playing for us. His hard work is paying off."
Price also opened the consolation bracket with a win in the Round of 32 over UTSA's Tyler Brown (6-3, 4-6, 1-0) before falling to Texas' David Holiner (6-3, 6-4) in the ensuing round.
