FORT WORTH—The TCU men's tennis team was honored with the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) All-Academic Team Award Friday. In addition to the team milestone, three Horned Frogs were named ITA Scholar-Athletes for standout work in the classroom.
TCU received the ITA's All-Academic Team Award for the first time in program history after exceeding the minimum cumulative team grade-point average requirement of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) during the fall 2008 and spring 2009 semesters. All eligible student-athletes who competed in at least one varsity match during the academic year factored into the team GPA figure.
"I'm really excited that our team was able to earn this award, because in our first team meeting of every year it's one of our first goals we talk about," Borelli said. "The two semester GPAs we posted this year were the highest that our team has had since we began monitoring (nearly 10 years ago). The guys did a great job in the classroom this year it's a real testament to the outstanding efforts of our Athletic Academic Services program here at TCU."
Leading TCU's academic efforts were three student-athletes named ITA Scholar-Athletes in Kelubia Mabatah, Cameron Nash and Zach Nichols. The honor was awarded to only those players who posted a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 over the two semesters while earning a varsity letter. Nash was the only student-athlete at TCU to post a perfect 4.0 GPA during the spring 2009 term.
While three Frogs were included on the ITA's Scholar-Athlete listing, two others added to the team's academic success but were ineligible for the award. Both Christopher Price and Slah Mbarek reached the 3.5 GPA level during the spring, their first semesters at TCU, but the ITA also requires that its honorees be enrolled at their respective institutions for both semesters of the academic year.
