TOURNAMENT DRAWS & RESULTS
TULSA, Okla.—Singles qualifying began for the TCU men's tennis team Monday at the D'Novo ITA All-American Championships at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center, as sophomore Slah Mbarek and junior Emanuel Brighiu each opened play in the tournament.
Both Horned Frogs entered the draw as one of the top-20 seeds, but neither was able to escape Monday's first round of the qualifying bracket. The losses concluded TCU's scheduled singles competition for the tournament, although the squad will feature a pair of doubles teams in action in the qualifying round starting Tuesday.
Mbarek, the draw's seventh seed who was ranked as the nation's No. 55 singles player in the preseason, suffered a straight-set loss to Florida's Johnny Hamui in the opening round, 6-4, 6-4.
Brighiu, seeded 20th in the draw and ranked 68th nationally, got off to a slow start against North Carolina's Brennan Boyjian. He was unable to take a game in the opening set, but he then rallied to win the second. The match turned into a hard-fought battle in the third, but Boyjian was able to outlast Brighiu in the end, winning 0-6, 6-4, 7-5.
TCU continues action at the D'Novo ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa Tuesday with the start of doubles qualifying. TCU will feature the pairings of Emanuel Brighiu-Chris Price and Slah Mbarek-Marius Cirstea in action.
