AUSTIN, Texas - The TCU men's tennis team had a successful opening day at the Wilson/ITA South Central Regional Championship, highlighted by two TCU newcomers scoring victories over seeded opponents.
TCU freshman Zach Nichols began the day by defeating Dennis Polyakov of Rice by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Nichols followed up with a win over No. 9 Ilya Babinciuc of Texas Tech, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(5), to move on to the singles round of 32.
Another newcomer, Adrian Simon, scored an opening round 6-3, 6-3 victory over UT-Pan American's Marcus Dornauf. Simon then upset No. 3 Jerry Makowski of Texas A&M, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(6). Makowski is the top player on the Aggie squad and is currently ranked No. 34 nationally.
Kriegler Brink also had an impressive opening day, winning two matches to advance to the round of 32. Brink began with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hoony Shin of Rice, and followed with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Attila Bucko of Baylor. Brink fell to Bucko earlier this season at the Baylor Invitational by a score of 2-6, 6-0, 6-1.
"I'm really pleased will how we played today," said TCU head coach Dave Borelli. "I was especially pleased with how Kriegler played since he lost to the same player earlier this season. It's always a good day for TCU when you can get wins over Baylor, Texas A&M and Texas Tech. I really feel we're turning the corner and getting back on track to make it a great program again."
Casey Powers also earned a win on Saturday, defeating Jeremy Reed of Texas Tech 7-6, 3-6, 6-2, before falling to Chong Wang of Rice by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Caleb Bulls fell to Brad Williams of Texas A&M 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round.
In doubles action, the TCU duo of Nichols and Simon earned an opening-win and received a second-round bye. The Frogs will face a tough task in the round of 16 on Sunday, meeting No. 3 Kunpfer and Muller of Baylor. The duo of Brink and Panayides was shutout by No. 1 Kutrovsky and Zavala of Texas, 8-0, while the pair of Bulls and Powers fell to Rice's Polyakov and Shin, 8-5.
