Senior Alex Menichini from the 16th-ranked TCU men's tennis team fell to Sam Warburg of Stanford in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship Thursday. Menichini, the nation's 48th-ranked player, was beaten by No. 8-rated Warburg in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. The Horned Frog was coming off an upset of No. 24 Mark Van Elden of Oklahoma State the day before.
Menichini finished his senior year with a 15-17 record and went 7-12 in dual matches. He was the first Horned Frog since All-American Trace Fielding in 2001 to compete in either of the individual championships. Had Menichini defeated Warburg, he would have garnered All-America praise and become only the 20th Frog to hold such distinction.
Menichini's loss concluded the 2003-04 season for the Horned Frogs. The team was defeated in the round of 16 during the NCAA Tournament by Clemson. TCU upset Kentucky on the Wildcats' home courts in the second round to advance to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2001.
