Rafael Abreu and Fabrizio Sestini from the TCU men's tennis squad will begin play in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Thursday in Ann Arbor, Mich. Abreu and Sestini are ranked No. 8 in the country this fall and received an at-large bid to the event two days after the Oct. 22-25 ITA South Central Regional Championships in Austin, Texas. The duo would have gotten an automatic bid if it had won the regional, but TCU's top team faltered in the final to Lars Poerschke and Matija Zgaga from Baylor.
Abreu and Sestini will take on Ivan Angulo Carrasco and Ricardo Omanna from the College of Santa Fe in the first round Thursday morning. Carrasco and Omanna won the ITA Small College Championships. If the Horned Frogs' duo wins, it would face either 34th-ranked Scott Green and Ross Wilson from Ohio State or No. 13-rated Luiz Carvalho and Jose-Carlos Pinto from Mississippi State.
Last year, Abreu and Sestini drew Andrew Colombo and Gabor Zoltan Pelva, then the No. 4-ranked team in the country from Auburn, and lost 8-4. TCU's team was unranked at the time. Abreu and Sestini went on to grab a win against Jose Luchuga and Nima Roshan from BYU in the consolation before Brown's Jamie Cerretani and Adil Shamasdin ended their stay.
TCU is making consecutive appearances in the National Indoors for the first time since 1998 and 1999 when Esteban Carril competed in singles. The Frogs' longest streak of appearances was during a six-year stretch from 1994-1999. Former standout David Pate owns TCU's lone title at the event when he was crowned the 1982 champion after defeating famed Andre Agassi coach Brad Gilbert from Pepperdine in straight sets in the final.
