Fabrizio Sestini from the TCU men's tennis team won his first-round match in the qualifying tournament of the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships Monday. Sestini, ranked 73rd this fall, picked up a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Brandon Allan from Middle Tennessee State at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., to advance. He needs two more victories to reach the main draw of the tournament, which begins Oct. 7. Sestini faces Daniel Sebescen from California Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. CDT.
TCU's other three competitors in the event were all knocked out in the first round. Rafael Abreu suffered a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 setback to Florida State's Chris Westerhof and No. 78 Eric Hechtman of Miami (Fla.) posted a 7-6(7), 7-5 victory against Jordan Freitas. Jacopo Tezza fell to 91st-rated Irving Morales of Troy in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.
Doubles was equally unkind to the Horned Frogs' duo of Freitas and Tezza, as they were dropped by Shannon Buck and Tyler McClung from Air Force in a tiebreaker, 9-8(3). Abreu and Sestini are already in the main draw due to their No. 8 national ranking.
