FORT WORTH, TexasEight members of the TCU men's tennis team will be in action at the ITA South Central Regional Championships in Austin, Texas. The tournament begins Friday, Oct. 22, and continues through Monday, Oct. 25. The singles finalists and doubles champions receive automatic bids to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., over Nov. 4-7.
Rafael Abreu and Fabrizio Sestini received the top seed for the doubles portion of the regional, thanks to their No. 8 fall ranking. Jordan Freitas and Jacopo Tezza, who are ranked 56th, are seeded third for doubles. Robert Gallman, who is playing his first tournament this season after battling injuries most of the fall, will play doubles with Jacob Martin. TCU's final duo is comprised of Craig Stopa and Andrew Ulrich. All eight Horned Frogs will play in singles as well.
"I'm excited about this tournament," TCU head coach Joey Rivé said. "Our doubles teams are seeded higher than they've been in a long time. That's a great indication of where we are."
The ITA South Central Regional consists of a 128-player singles draw and a 64-team doubles bracket. Consolation matches are played for each draw. Complete draws and tournament results can be found at the USTA's Web site, www.usta.com.
In last year's regional at TCU, Abreu and Sestini surprised the field and won the doubles title against a duo from Baylor. They became the first TCU doubles team to qualify for the ITA Indoor Championships since 1996. The last regional singles champion the Frogs had was Esteban Carril in 2000 when he gutted out a three-setter against Andy Leber from Texas-Arlington.
